Visiting Fulbright Specialist – Community Highlights

“Dr. Mohamad enhanced our belief and mission of diversity, expanding it to a global level of learning.”

- Lynn Miller-Pease, Executive Director – Leadership Evansville
In September 2006, The Institute for Global Enterprise in Indiana earned the prestigious opportunity to participate in the 2006 Fulbright Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World. The Institute was proud to welcome Dr. Saadiah Mohamad as our 2006 Visiting Fulbright Specialist. (“Sharing Islamic Principles”)

During her three week stay, Dr. Mohamad provided invaluable scholastic and economical perspectives related to UE and local business executives. Even more so, she possessed a multi-faceted level of expertise that enabled the Institute to create an array of local engagement to
include interaction with area high school students, civic organizations, and the greater Evansville community.

Dr. Mohamad emphasized the importance cross-cultural awareness to local area high school students through her visits to Bosse High School and the Signature School. It was there she shared various elements of her life in a multi-racial, multi-cultural Malaysia and also spoke of how Islam has shaped her views and personality.

Additionally, Dr. Mohamad facilitated a training session for Leadership Evansville, a local organization that works to develop effective leaders committed to utilizing diversity and creativity for the betterment of the community. Within the context of “servant leadership,” she spoke with class participants of the small things we can do as global citizens to contribute to world peace.

A true highlight of Dr. Mohamad’s Fulbright experience took place on September 12, 2006. Dr. Mohamad delivered a first-of-its-kind lecture and discussion: Can Islam Promote World Peace? A Muslim Woman’s Perspective.” Over 450 people attended this event at UE’s Neu Chapel to hear Dr. Mohamad explain the Islamic principles that teach sustainable peace and understand the historical evidence of Muslims’ contributions to world civilization. She discussed the post-September 11 environment of Southeast Asia and clarified the role of women in Islam. Shared reflections were invited from the audience as Dr. Mohamad addressed these topics and their application within our own community. (“Islamic terrorist a misnomer”).
