Saadiah Mohamad, PhD

2006 Visiting Fulbright Specialist

In September 2006, The Institute for Global Enterprise in Indiana earned the prestigious opportunity to participate in the 2006 Fulbright Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World. The Institute was proud to welcome Dr. Saadiah Mohamad as our 2006 Visiting Fulbright Specialist. (“Sharing Islamic Principles”)

Dr. Saadiah Mohamad, a Malaysian national, works as an associate professor with the Faculty of Business Management at MARA University of Technology – the largest university in Malaysia. In 2003 she earned her PhD in Economics from the National University of Malaysia.

During her three week stay, Dr. Mohamad provided invaluable scholastic, economical, and cultural contributions to the UE campus and beyond. She completed a rigorous schedule of executive education seminars, in-class guest lectures at UE and local high school, media interviews, and broad community engagement.

The Evansville business community gained an in-depth understanding of the growing trade relationship between the U.S. and Malaysia. Executives in attendance at the “Doing Business in Malaysia” seminar (“Doing Business in Malaysia”) heard how Malaysia’s economic drive is being steered by a manufacturing-based, capital-intensive industry that has transformed the market-oriented economy of Southeast Asia in recent years. Additionally, itsstatus as the 10 th largest trading partner of the U.S. with $44 billion in two-way trade and its classification as one of the leading recipients of foreign direct investments among emerging markets served as a keen point of interest. (“Trade has history with Muslims”).

When speaking with the Evansville Rotary Club, Dr. Mohamad presented “Islam and the Global Marketplace” and described the rising trend of Islamic financial services consumed by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. She also detailed how the Malaysian government policy of "Islam Hadhari" or “Civilizational Islam” serves as a tool for economic development; emphasizing the importance of balancing spiritual values and the quality of human capital with that of physical economic development.
(“Educator serves up powerful message”).

In-class guest lectures served as another component of Dr. Mohamad’s Fulbright visit. At UE and USI, her global business expertise was evident through her lectures of exchange rate policies of Southeast Asia, Malaysian economic development initiatives, and the use of technology in the Muslim world and the digital divide – to name a few. Several UE business students expressed their appreciation of the opportunity to closely interact with Dr. Mohamad. Many students mentioned that hearing an international economist detail the churning tide of globalization brought a realistic perspective to their current global business studies.
